Mine were more Dutch but a bit German, but underneath all National boundaries they were European.
My rellies are similar. First they were horrified mother could not cope and went to hospital and we were in care. They were eager beavers feathering their nests. There were all different and individual responses, but none very caring. They were embarrassed and defensive about their homes and riches, and when my brother and sister started having problems. One offered one night as break to sister. Another offered a coupokle of weeks to brother to recover from road accident, but put him down for not working hard enough.
Last year I was at an arts dinner. I sat next to a mayor who was telling me about his lovely Irish friendly extended family. It was pleasant, but inside my heart really ached. I have no close Irish rellies, since dad died when I was 11..
