Struggling reaching a medication balance (Bipolar and Generalised Anxiety Disorder)

My medications are out of balance again and its causing really mood swings and triggering bipolar episodes and even causing physical symptoms.

Many many years ago I had a spectacular breakdown and was disgnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. I was treated with antidepressants, had them changed over the years, and one pdoc even tried me on Lamotrigen (an antiepileptic) but the rather scary allegic reaction i had vetoed that idea. I would cycle in an out of depression with episodes lasting several months to a year with brief periods of happy productive time in between where i would get excited start a new career, then crash back into depression again. They antidepressants just weren't working enough.

Then a few years ago I had a very different breakdown and they diagnosed me with Bipolar and started me on Lithium. Then a few months later they said I had hypothyroidism. So they treated me for that with Thyoxine. They fiddled with adding antipsychotics and antidepressants and now they've added a new med to the mix. Except a month after I started the new med they say my Thyroid is out again. This time its hyperthyroidism. Heat intolerence, irritability, anxiety, increased bipolar symptoms. So we have to decrease the thyroxine to see if that levels it out.

Its just so frustrating. Its been 6 years since i was diagnosed bipolar and we are still messing with meds. For those of you out there does it get better? Can you reach medication balance? Or is it adjustment after adjustment for the rest of your life?

Any insights would be helpful.

Cheers in advance,

Ruby Bear

Hello and hugs @Ruby_Bear

I like to first say sorry that we have not replied to you Heart

My husband has had lots of diagnosis, such as SAD, GAD, inherited depression , MDD and then adult ADHD and now Bipolar2

Sometimes it has being hard finding the balance for years , he has a few breakdowns including times in hospital

He was always given just antidepressants, at his last time in hospital they have put him on anti anxiety meds as well which has helped a bit, still have some ups and downs
