What to do for son who is homeless and needs NDIS SIL

My son is 33, originally diagnosed with schizophrenia, he now has a diagnosis of chronic bipolar with psychotic features. He has had multiple admission to hospital with extended stays. He is now HOMELESS. He has NDIS funding for support workers and psychology. But being homeless, he cannot access these supports. He is under the Mental Health Act for the next 12 months.

His Occupational Therapy report indicated the need for a SIL property. However, we have been told it may be months before a decision is made by the NDIS. We have also been told that the NDIS is NOT likely to provide someone with complex ill-mental health, a SIL property.

Can someone tell me help? Why can the NDIS not provide a property?

My son is unable to manage his finances, unable to get himself to appointments, unable to look after his personal hygiene, unable to clean a home etc. When he stays with us, I need to monitor him all day to make sure our home is safe (eg: fridge door closed, food put away, he isn't eating off-food, heating is turned off, pets are safe, and I am required to clean up after him constantly). And lots of other issues I don't want to mention. His memory is poor and lacks insight into his health and his needs. He isn't managing being homeless and I have noted his mental health is now deteriorating.

Does anyone have any advice for me? What can I do?

I have already been talking to local politicians. I am happy to go to the media.

Thank you so much, in advance.

Hey @Mags ,

Sorry to hear about the situation of your son. It sounds incredibly complicated.

Is there an NDIS advocate you can get in contact with?

Hey,

I'm so sorry to hear about your son's situation.

It wouldn't be the NDIS directly providing a property. SIL houses are owned by NDIS providers so speaking with a few providers is your best bet. I'd ask which state you're in, but I'm unsure if that's allowed here!

Feel free to ask me questions

Thank you for the reply. I think I have worked out how to use this website. It is, in itself, complex and I am so burnout and stressed from caring for my son, I have limited ability to take on other tasks.

The situation with my son is enormously complex.

There must be someone else out there who has been through the same experience?

My son is on a disability pension, has NDIS support workers, is under the mental health act. Is now homeless. This Occupational Therapist has written a report recommending a SIL property with 11 hours of care a day. But we have been told it will be months before the application is even looked at and it will be most unlikely that he would be funded for a property. I am hearing that the NDIS do not fund for what they see as 'homelessness'. They do not recognise that the person's ill-mental health is responsible for their inability to manage a property.

My son can barely remember to close the fridge let alone manage a home. I have contacted an Advocacy service.

Does anyone have any experience of this and could offer some advice.

Hey @Mags just a lil tip, if you want other members to be notified that you've responded, you can tag them - use the @ symbol and a drop down will appear, and you can choose their name. If their name isn't there, you can type it out and it should then appear for you to select, then it will show up in blue, like this: @AnonymooseOG
